1. What are you most passionate about?
Oral health promotion, particularly the school based fluoride varnish program I developed called Sun Smiles.
2. What is your best way to de-stress after a busy day?
Drinking a great Gin & Tonic, my favourite local gin is Yardarm by Hurdle Creek Still at Milawa, my favourite Victorian gin is any of the Four Pillars range!
3. Do you have any other corporate skills or experience?
I have recently written and published a children’s picture book titled “Who is the Tooth Fairy’s best friend?” I’m also an educator with the Colgate Professional Education Network, presenting oral health modules at 6 Universities and Institutes across Victoria and Wagga, NSW.
4. How rural/remote have you been?
I grew up on a sheep/wheat farm at Lockhart, a small country town in the Riverina, NSW. During college holidays I travelled by 4WD throughout Western Australia and the Northern Territory. We have had several 6 week family camping trips through outback South Australia, NSW and Queensland. Highlights include going to the Birdsville Races, staying underground at Coober Pedy and digging for garnets at Gem Tree.
5. Have you always practiced rurally? And if so, for how long?
I have been practicing as a dental hygienist for 30 years, the last 19 years in Wangaratta in North East Victoria. Prior to this I worked in Ballarat, Brisbane and Adelaide. I have also worked abroad as a dental hygienist in Germany and New Zealand.
6. What is the weirdest word you use every day in your field of work/study?
7. What is your hidden talent or skill outside of work?
Mixing a great Gin & Tonic, experimenting with great local and International Gins and combining different botanicals, tonic waters and garnishes!
8. What is the most rewarding thing you have done?
Raising three beautiful teenagers!
9. Where is your favourite place in the world?
Lauterbrunnen in the Swiss Alps –for its shear beauty or visiting Hong Kong Disneyland with my kids – it really is the happiest place on Earth!
10. Lastly, why allied health?
I love the biology and science behind a career in dental hygiene.
